The Resume

    (August 9, 1906-December 7, 1988)
    Born in Nashville, Tennessee
Acted in 'Taming of the Shrew (1929), 'Min and Bill (1930),' 'The Cabin in the Cotton (1932)' 'The Sun Shines Bright (1953)' and 'The Wings of Eagles (1956)'
Portrayed John Wayne's sister-in-law, Martha Edwards, in 'The Searchers (1956)'

Why she might be annoying:

    Her acting skills were unimpressive.
She came out of retirement to unsuccessfully audition for the part of Melanie in ‘Gone with the Wind.
There are some critics who believe that 'The Searchers' promoted the subliminal message that she and the John Wayne character (Ethan) engaged in an adulterous relationship.
The theory is that Ethan is actually Debbie's father because he was absent for eight years and she's an eight year old (although no other dialogue alludes to such a relationship).

Why she might not be annoying:

    She trained as a ballerina.
She made her stage debut as a chorus girl in 'Funny Face,' with Fred Astaire and 'Treasure Girl' with Gertrude Lawrence.
She did her Gone With the Wind screen test with Susan Hayward (then Edythe Marrenner).
She received positive notices for her role as Marie Dressler's daughter in 'Min and Bill' (Dressler won her only Oscar for the film).
She turned down the secondary lead opposite Fred Astaire in 'Flying Down to Rio' to go on her honeymoon (Ginger Rogers stepped in and the rest is history).
She was married to Merian C. Cooper for forty years until his death (they had three kids together).
She had a minor comeback in the 1950s, with supporting roles in three John Ford films, before leaving movie acting for the final time.
