He was nicknamed 'The Magician' by football pundits.
He was considered too small for a quarterback.
He asked for his release from the Broncos, after he found out of the team's plans to use Pete Liske as the starting quarterback for the 1969 season.
He played on three different teams in the last couple seasons of his career.
He struggled with a cocaine addiction after his playing career ended.

He successfully negotiated with the Broncos to play the quarterback position, after they originally wanted to convert him to a defensive back.
He is the first quarterback of color to start in an AFL game.
He voluntarily made the switch to wide receiver when he signed with Buffalo, in a position he played for the remainder of his career.
He earned two Super Bowl rings as a member of the Dolphins (1972, 1973).
He turned his life around after his battle with addiction and served as the director for a Boys and Girls Clubs branch in Long Beach, California before his retirement.
