The Resume

    (July 29, 1923-April 5, 2012)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
    Former jazz drummer
Opened a musical instrument store in London (1960)
    Founded Marshall Amplification (1962)

Why he might be annoying:

He chopped off the end of his thumb working as a meat slicer.
He was initially reluctant to sell guitars at his store: 'I know a lot about drums, but not about guitars and amplifiers.'
He was nicknamed 'the Father of Loud.'
He contributed to a generation's hearing problems.

Why he might not be annoying:

Customers of his store, including Ritchie Blackmore and Pete Townshend, encouraged him to create an amplifier that would be louder and 'dirtier' than the standard Fender amps.
He donated millions of pounds to charities, including the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in London, where he was treated for tuberculosis as a child.
He resisted suggestions that he move production of the amps out of Britain to reduce costs.
At 80, he still arrived at the office each day at six in the morning and said, 'I believe that hard work keeps you young. I'm so busy I don't have time to think, 'Oh, I'm getting old!' '
In announcing his death, his company noted, 'He is now in a better place, which has just got a whole lot louder.'
