Along with Carthage, it was destroyed by the Romans at the end of the Third Punic War (146 BC).
It was conquered by Louis IX of France during the Eighth Crusade. (But only briefly due to an outbreak of dysentery that swept through the French army and killed Louis.)
It was one of the main ports for the Barbary pirates that attacked shipping in the Mediterranean and raided coasts to capture and enslave the inhabitants.
It was the last base in for the Axis armies in Africa during World War II.
Twenty civilians and a police officer were killed in a terrorist attack on the Bardo National Museum (March 18, 2015).
It suffers serious air pollution, with airborne particulate concentrations more than three times the maximum levels recommended by the World Health Organization.

Its medina quarter was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1979).
It was headquarters for the Arab League (1979-90).
A wave of protests led to the resignation of dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali followed by democratic elections (December, 2010-January, 2011), and triggered the wider Arab Spring movement.
It generates a third of Tunisia’s gross domestic product.
Mercer rated it as the city with the lowest cost of living for expatriates in the world (2017).
