His main claim to fame was giving Pete Rose a lifetime suspension from baseball.
Some Pete Rose fans attempt to speak for Giamatti's dead body, saying he would lift the ban if he were still alive.
He was a heavy smoker, which contributed to his fatal heart attack at 51.
He only served as commissioner for 154 days.
He said that baseball is 'designed to break your heart.'
He never lived to see his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox, win the World Series.

He had Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a degenerative nerve condition.
He was the youngest president in Yale University history.
One of his students said of him, 'He makes you excited about the subject even if you're not.'
He was not afraid to make unpopular and tough decisions for the sake of baseball.
He is the father of actor Paul Giamatti.
Fifteen years after his death, he appeared in the movie 'Sideways' (he was in a photograph with Paul).
