Used self-immolation (setting oneself on fire) to bring attention to the repressive policies of the Catholic Diem regime that controlled the South Vietnamese government in the '60s

Why he might be annoying:

He committed suicide.
Buddhist believe suicide is a sin, so it was referred to as as 'an act of self-sacrifice for the sake of others.'
His death inspired three other monks and a nun to end there lives by self-immolation.

Why he might not be annoying:

He wanted Vietnamese Buddhists given the same religious rights/freedoms Catholics have.
Although on fire he sat in the lotus position, never uttering a sound as the fire consumed him.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy's had this picture on his desk.
Five months after his death, South Vietnamese Diem's regime, was overthrown (November, 1963).
His death shaped public opinion to change against the US backed South Vietnamese government.
The picture was used by Chef in a 'South Park' episode (the South Park flag controversy).
His photo ended up on the cover of Rage Against the Machine's debut album.
