The Resume

    (September 27, 2002-July 28, 2003)
Joss Whedon produced series about a group of 26th Century refugees/outlaws/smugglers in a 'Firefly' class spaceship named Serenity
Regular cast: Nathan Fillon, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau and Ron Glass
Opening narration, 'Here's how it is: The Earth got used up, so we moved out and terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths Some rich and flush with new technologies, some not so much, the Central Planets, thems form the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity She's a transport ship; Firefly class Got a good crew; fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher for some reason, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, took his genius sister outta some Alliance camp, so they're keepin' a low profile You understand You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is'

Why Firefly might be annoying:

Whedon had an enormous amount of trouble with the Fox Network; they rejected his original pilot, showed episodes out of order, promoted it poorly and inaccurately, interfered constantly with character development and cancelled it with no final concluding episode to wrap things up.
The bad guys wore uniforms left over from the movie, Starship Troopers.
A fan based campaign to save it failed.
It was cancelled far too quickly with only eleven of the fourteen episodes produced being aired.
It was pre-empted by sporting events with great regularity.
Other than space flight, most technology was 19th or 20th Century including most noticeably firearms.
It ranked only 98th in the Nielsens when it was cancelled.

Why Firefly might not be annoying:

The 'universe' in which the show was set, a metaphorical post-Civil War Old West with a culture featuring a combination of contemporary Asian and the Old West ruled by a brutal '1984' type dictatorship was highly original.
The writing was fantastic, the 'look' and special effects were (pun intended) out of this world and as good as any big screen movie, all of which was accomplished on a relatively small budget.
The cast, particularly Summer Glau as an emotionally abused child prodigy and fugitive, may very well have been the best in televised science fiction history.
There was a serious attempt to be scientifically accurate including no faster-than-light spaceflight (because it is physically impossible) and portraying space as silent which it is because sound cannot travel in the vacuum of space.
A hit movie, Serenity was based on it and wrapped the series up in a satisfactory fashion. The series has been a hit in DVD sales and rental as has its soundtrack and has inspired a couple of comic book series. Take that Fox!
