    It was a central location in the Bleeding Kansas movement, the Wakarusa War and the Sacking of Lawrence.
    It was the site of the Lawrence massacre during the American Civil War, which saw 164 civilians killed (August 21, 1863).
    Its economy primarily relied on industry during the late 19th century.
    It isn’t known for anything other than the University of Kansas.

Why Lawrence, Kansas might not be annoying:

    It serves as the county seat for Douglas County.
    It was named after abolitionist Amos A. Lawrence.
    It is considered one of the first communities to endorse free-state politics.
    The majority of the streets in the original settlement were named after American states.
    It defeated Emporia by one vote to be the site where the University of Kansas would be built.
    Its population has steadily grown every year since it was founded.
    It is home to the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, the oldest stadium located west of the Mississippi River.
    It was the first city in Kansas to enact ordinances on discrimination towards sexual orientation and gender identity.
    In addition to the University of Kansas, it is home to the Haskell Indian Nations University.
