    He was born on the same day as Thomas Edison.
    He is considered to be the last authenticated survivor of the U.S Civil War.
    During his lifetime, he could have spoken with veterans who served in the American Revolution to the Korean War.
    He received 8,000 birthday cards in 1953.
    He outlived 2,675,000 of his former comrades in arms.
    He was buried with full military honors.
