He was a character actor, but his characters were limited. He went from playing cowboys, to sea captains, to police officers, and finally to old farmers.
Despite being from New York City, he had more of a midwestern accent.
He was on more TV shows than he was in movies.

He died of a heart attack after a serious car accident at 71.
Some of his last movies have become cult classics.
Royal provided the voice for Abraham Lincoln in Walt Disney's of Presidents in both Disneyland and Disney World. His voice is still used today.
