The Resume

    (November 21, 1929-May 2, 2009)
Born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York
    Birth name was Marilyn Edwards
Author of 'The Women's Room' and 'The War Against Women'
Other books include 'The Bleeding Heart (1980),' 'Her Mother’s Daughter (1987),' 'Our Father (1994),' 'In the Name of Friendship (2006),' 'Beyond Power: On Women, Men and Morals (1985)' and 'From Eve to Dawn (1995)'

Why she might be annoying:

    She was a heavy smoker.
She was accused of being anti-male after writing: 'All men are rapists, and that's all they are. They rape us with their eyes, their laws, and their codes.'
The line was frequently attributed to her personally (it was actually said by a character in her novel). It still however reinforced the conservative's stereotype of the 'bra-burning feminazi.'
She likely coined the phrase for the Democrat Party's parroted 'War on Women' slogan (although Andrea Dworkin and Susan Faludi could also lay claim).

Why she might not be annoying:

'The Women's Room' sold more than 20 million copies.
She was an English instructor at Hofstra University, from 1964 to 1968.
She was later an assistant professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, from 1972 to 1976.
Her daughter was raped when she was eighteen (the rapist was later convicted and sent to prison).
She combatted the notion that she hated men by saying: 'The women of my generation raised feminist sons. These men love their children, they are involved with them.'
She underwent two years of chemotherapy and a ten day coma after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 1992. She emerged cancer free.
