Why he might be annoying:

His versions of 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix' and 'Fire and Rain' came out the same time as the Glen Campbell and James Taylor (respectively) versions did. His were buried by radio stations, making stars of Campbell and Taylor.
His manager convinced him to record 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone?' to jump on the folk-rock bandwagon of the time. To this day he dislikes the song and says he wishes he'd never recorded it.

Why he might not be annoying:

He says his first musical inspiration was his father.
His dad moved the family to Baton Rouge when he was 5. Here he discovered R&B and realized he wanted a singing career.
Legendary DJ Alan Freed was the one who came up with his stage name.
'Swayin' To The Music (Slow Dancin')' was a surprise Top 10 hit in 1977 after he had been written off as strictly a '60s act.
He sold over 30 million records.
His song 'Secret Agent Man' was composed for TV's 'Danger Man' (1964-66), but remains popular and can be heard in the movies 'Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995),' 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)' and 'Bowfinger (1999).'
