Playwright

The Resume

    (circa 456 BC-circa 386 BC)
    Born in Greece
Wrote 'The Clouds,' 'The Wasps,' 'The Birds,' 'The Frogs,' 'Lysistrata' and 'Ecclesiazusae'
Known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy

Why he might be annoying:

He made jokes about Euripides' daughter being killed by a rabid dog.
He was prosecuted for defaming Athens.
His play 'The Clouds' finished last in a comic festival.
He then re-wrote the play to include a section where the playwright takes the stage to berate the audience for their poor sense of humor.
Some scholars think his negative portrayal of Socrates in 'The Clouds' contributed to the philosopher's execution.

Why he might not be annoying:

His plays are the only surviving complete examples of Ancient Greek comedy.
Socrates was not offended by his portrayal in 'The Clouds,' reportedly standing and waving to the audience at the play's first performance.
Plato wrote 'The Graces chose his soul as their abode.'
His Lysistrata, in which the women of Athens and Sparta refuse to have sex until their husbands stop fighting, inspired erotic illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley.
