Why she might be annoying:

Growing up, her dreams of being a gymnast ended due to a growth spurt.
While in high school, she was kicked off her school's team, being called a 'waste of space.' This came on top of one of her teachers saying she was 'too old' to try a new sport.
She is highly religious.

Why she might not be annoying:

Months before the 2000 Olympics, she broke her foot and was not fully healed even as she was competing in the Olympics.
In spite of her pain and being in eighth place after one dive, she pulled off a monumental upset by winning gold. She was the first American woman to win a platform diving gold since 1964 and the last American to win diving gold until David Boudia in 2012.
She has her own foundation.
