    Winston Churchill nicknamed her 'Mule' for her stubbornness.
    She eloped to America with her first husband (1936).
    Her parents learned about her second marriage from the press before she told them (1949).
    She was arrested multiple times for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, eventually serving ten days in Holloway Prison.
    Friends said she had a self-destructive streak.
    She said, 'I burned my scandals at both ends.'

    During World War II, she served in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, interpreting reconnaissance photos.
    She accompanied her father to the Tehran and Yalta conferences.
    After making movies in Italy, she convinced Winston to remove derogatory remarks about Italians from his speeches.
    She overcame alcoholism and quit drinking.
