His middle name was Marion.
He was a deeply polarizing figure in Wisconsin.
He opposed US entry into World War I.
Theodore Roosevelt called him 'a skunk.'
He sought the Republican nomination in 1912 but lost to William Howard Taft.
He ran for president in 1924 (this time on the Progressive ticket) but lost to Calvin Coolidge.

He was a great orator.
He introduced worker's compensation as governor of Wisconsin.
He supported progressive taxation.
He established political primaries and the direct election of US Senators to office.
He placed railroads under government control.
His reforms were dubbed the 'Wisconsin idea.'
He opposed big business.
He founded 'LaFollette's Weekly,' today known as 'The Progressive.'
Someone tried to poison him while he was conducting a Senate filibuster.
He is considered one of the great progressives in US history.
In 1957, he was voted one of the five greatest Senators of all time.
