The Resume

    (1979-1985)
    Born in Helsinki, Finland
    1982-84 line-up:
    Michael Monroe, lead vocals
    Andy McCoy, lead guitar
Nasty Suicide (Jan-Markus Stenfors), rhythm guitar
    Sami Yaffa, bass guitar
    Razzle (Nicholas Dingley), drums
Monroe and McCoy reformed the band in 2001-09
Recorded the albums 'Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks' (1981), 'Oriental Beat' (1982), 'Self-Destruction Blues' (1982), 'Back to Mystery City' (1983), 'Two Steps from the Move' (1984), 'Twelve Shots on the Rocks' (2002), 'Another Hostile Takeover' (2005),, and 'Street Party' (2007)

Why they might be annoying:

When they moved to Stockholm (1980), they mostly lived in the streets and begged for money -- except McCoy, who lived with a wealthy girlfriend.
Most of them abused heroin, amphetamines, and alcohol in the 1980s.
During a brief tour of Israel (1983), Monroe was unable to leave their hotel because the local Orthodox Jews thought he was a sluttily-dressed woman and would spit on him.
If you thought the hair bands of the late 1980s looked goofy, you can blame them. According to Foo Fighter Chris Shiflett, 'The Hollywood scene changed in just one night after people saw Hanoi Rocks. After that, everyone was wearing the same kind of hair, clothes, and makeup as Monroe.'

Why they might not be annoying:

If you thought the hair bands of the late 1980s looked cool, you can thank them. According to Foo Fighter Chris Shiflett, 'The Hollywood scene changed in just one night after people saw Hanoi Rocks. After that, everyone was wearing the same kind of hair, clothes, and makeup as Monroe.'
They were huge in Scandinavia and Japan.
They were on the verge of a commercial breakthrough when Razzle was killed in a car crash (December 8, 1984).
Axl Rose called them the biggest influence on Guns n' Roses.
Appropriately, Nasty Suicide makes an appearance in the video for GnR's 'Paradise City.'
