He lied about being born on the fourth of July to increase his patriotic image.
His true birthday is still unknown.
He divorced his first wife after having a child with her.
He wrote 'Over There' to encourage Americans to go to war during World War I.
His songs bordered on pure jingoism, which even extended to the film biography 'Yankee Doodle Dandy.'
'Yankee Doodle Dandy' falsely portrayed him as only having one wife, whose name did not match either of his real wives.

He was married to his second wife for 35 years until his death.
