    (circa 1575-December 25, 1635)

    'The Father of New France'

Why he might be annoying:

Little is known about him, with his year of birth, his appearance and his place of burial all being subject to debate.
He imposed severe restrictions on speech and the press in New France.
During a deer hunt with Huron Indians, he became lost and wandered the woods for three days before bumping into another band of Hurons by chance.

Why he might not be annoying:

He led 27 crossings of the North Atlantic without losing a ship.
Unlike many 17th century Europeans, he considered the Indians intellectual equals.
He arranged to have French settlers live with natives, learning their language and customs, to help adapt to life in North America.
