    He wed his cousin in an arranged marriage.
    He had affairs with several of his leading ladies.
    His voice had to be dubbed for the musical numbers in his films.

    He was known as 'the Charlie Chaplin of Indian cinema' since he often played a similar tramp-like figure.
    He was one of the first people in Indian cinema to realize that Bollywood films could become international hits.
    Two of the films he directed, 'Awaara' (1951) and 'Boot Polish' (1954), were nominees for the Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
    Time magazine wrote, 'To most of the planet, Raj Kapoor was India in all its vitality, humanity and poignancy.'
