    He lost in the opening round of the 1960 Olympics.
    He twice retired, then returned to the ring.
    His second reign as world champion lasted only seven months as he lost his first title defense.

    He was born right-handed but fought as a lefty, earning the nickname ‘El Zurdo de Oro’ (‘the Golden Southpaw’).
    He was known for his stamina, recording seven of his knockouts after the seventh round.
    He had an unusually slow heartbeat and pulse, which he claimed was the secret behind his endurance in the ring.
    During his first reign as world champion, he successfully defended his title seven times, then retired.
