Name possibly derived from Arab word ‘suf’ meaning ‘wool’
Aim is total loss of the self and surrender to God, with the help of techniques such as dancing, chanting and fasting
Best known in the West for its Turkish whirling dervishes, famous for their spinning dance

Why Sufism might be annoying:

The original adherents wore rough woolen clothing.
Followers must study with a spiritual teacher (Shaikh) for years—otherwise they’ll be misled by Satan.
It often requires followers to go without food or sleep.
A watered-down form of it has been embraced by Western hippies.
Most orders are for men only.
It has been accused of encouraging jihad.

Why Sufism might not be annoying:

It has been persecuted by both Western imperialists and mainstream Muslims.
Sufi scholars helped preserve ancient Greek learning.
It protested the materialism and corruption of early Islamic rulers.
It heavily influenced Arab poets such as Rumi.
Followers are frequently care for poor people and animals.
Some experts believe it is pacifistic and inclusive of other faiths.
Whirling dervishes can spin for hours at a time.
