Why he might be annoying:

He was a religious maniac.
After seizing power, he banned drinking, gambling, and even fancy clothes.
He stole thousands of 'sinful' personal possessions and burned them in a 'bonfire of the vanities.'
He destroyed many priceless paintings by Renaissance masters.
He created a law making sodomy punishable by death.
When the Pope offered to make him a cardinal, he refused and tried to overthrow him.
He had a gigantic schnoz.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an exciting and moving preacher.
Before seizing power, he refused to kiss the ass of Florence's ruler, Lorenzo de Medici.
Although he never held an official government job, he was the most powerful man in Florence for several years.
He used public money to feed the poor, create jobs, and lower taxes.
He was simultaneously hanged and burned by the people he had oppressed.
He kept his faith to the very end, praying quietly while he was executed.
