He won the 1927 Nobel Prize in Literature.
He was a talented mathematician and won a math award when he was 17.
He was a Jew who wanted to convert to Catholicism, but in light of rising anti-Semitism chose to remain Jewish as a sign of solidarity with his fellow Jews.
He worked for the League of Nations.
