Why he might be annoying:

He was overshadowed by fellow German film pioneers Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau.
Due to censorship, many of his films were not shown the way he had intended for decades.
He returned to Austria and Germany (1938) and made films for the Nazi regime.

Why he might not be annoying:

Jean Renoir said, '[Pabst] knows how, better than anyone else, to direct actors.'
He created the cinema's first lesbian character, Countess Geschwitz in 'Pandora's Box.'
He won the French Legion of Honor for advocating Franco-German cooperation in 'Kameradschaft.'
His wife claimed that he had returned to Germany to take care of family business and planned to stay only temporarily, but he was trapped in the country when WWII broke out.
