Why he might be annoying:

    He wrote an erotic novel, 'Le Con d'Irene' ('Irene's Cunt'), under a pseudonym (1927).
    He joined the French Communist Party (1927).
    Despite opposing the show trials of intellectuals and supporting Prague Spring, he remained a Communist the rest of his life.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was raised believing his mother was his sister, his maternal grandmother was his foster mother, and his biological father -- a married senator 30 years older than his mother -- was his godfather. (He was told the truth at age 19 as he left to serve in World War I, which neither he nor his parents believed he would return from.)
    He received the Croix de Guerre for bravery in both World War I and World War II.
    He joined the Resistance after the fall of France.
    He published works by dissidents Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Milan Kundera.
    Several of his poems were set to music and became popular songs in France.
    He came out as bisexual after the death of his wife (1970), attending Parisian pride parades in a pink convertible.
