Original line-up:

Edward 'Sonny' Bivins
Winfred 'Blue' Lovett
Kenny 'Wally' Kelley
Richard 'Ricky' Taylor
Recorded 'Kiss and Say Goodbye' and 'Shining Star'
Lead singer Smith died December 16, 1970 and was replaced by Gerald Alston

Why they might be annoying:

They are a two hit wonder.
Taylor quit the group in 1976 after converting to Islam and they remained a quartet until 1990.
Alston quit in 1988 to perform solo.
Both Lovett and Kelley quit in 1990, leaving Bivins the only remaining original member.
Lovett returned to form a new version of the Manhattans in 1995 with Alston, making for the confusing scenario of two sets of Manhattans (maintaining two different websites).

Why they might not be annoying:

All five original members served in the U.S. Armed Forces; Kelley in the Navy and the others in the Air Force.
Alston is the nephew of The Shirelles lead singer Shirley Owens.
They started as a doo-wop band but changed to a smooth ballad R&B style in the '70s which helped launch chart success.
They've had 11 Top Ten hits on Billboard's R&B charts.
'Kiss and Say Goodbye' went to #1 on both the pop and R&B charts in 1976.
'Shining Star' went gold and earned them a 1981 Grammy Award for 'Best R&B Group.'
