Why he might be annoying:

He was known as 'Old Tom' to distinguish him from his same-named son.
He split with his first partner, Allan Robertson, when he refused to join Robertson in denouncing the new gutta percha balls.
He had trouble with short putts, with Young Tom quipping 'You'd be a fine putter, father, if the hole were always a yard closer.'
He died in a fall at the St. Andrew's club after mistaking the door to a flight of stairs with the door to the bathroom.

Why he might not be annoying:

He standardized golf courses at 18 holes.
His 13 stroke win at the 1862 British Open stood as the largest margin of victory in a major championship for nearly a century and a half, until Tiger Woods won the 2000 US Open by 15.
He outlived all four of his children.
He said, 'I've had my troubles and my trials and with the help of God and of golf, I've gotten through somehow or other.'
The 18th green at St. Andrews was named in his honor.
