Why she might be annoying:

    According to an article in 'Vogue' magazine, she described herself as 'a rebellious teen, lazy at school' who wrote fan fiction and drew manga.
    People pronounce her surname as 'zow' (it is actually pronounced like the word 'jaw').
    Her film 'Nomadland' was censored in China because she made statements to 'Filmmaker' magazine that said she was drawn to her early subjects about the American heartland because of her upbringing in China and she was 'in a place where there are lies everywhere.'
    She also received criticism for downplaying the working conditions of Amazon workers in the midst of real life workers recounting stories of low wages and poor working conditions.
    One of her favorite directors is Spike Lee.

    She studied film production New York University's Tisch School for the Arts.
    She earned her her bachelor's degree in political science at Mount Holyoke College.
    She filmed 'Nomadland' while traveling the American west in an RV with many real life 'nomads.'
    She cited Werner Herzog and Terrence Malick as influences.
    She became the second woman to win the Best Director Oscar and the first woman of color to do so.
