    His Union Cavalry were never as successful as their Confederate counterparts.
    He was criticized for his indecisive nature.

    When Civil War broke out he made a dangerous journey through enemy territory to Mexico to rejoin his Brigade.
    He was an expert horseman.
    He suffered from malaria.
    He developed several methods for manufacturing steel castings and insulated electrical cable.
    He invented asphalt, giving the world a cheap, safe and smooth road surface.
