Example: 'The Mezzanine' is about a man riding an escalator, 'Vox' is about a single telephone conversation, etc.
Some of his novels include lengthy footnotes.
He has called the removal of old-fashioned card catalogs from libraries 'genocide.'
Some consider 'Vox' and 'The Fermata' to be pornographic.
He uses childish nicknames for genitalia.
Stephen King has called his work 'literary fingernail clippings.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He has a wonderful talent for language.
He is not afraid to write frankly about sex.
For this reason, religious conservatives and other prudes despise him.
