Tennis Player

The Resume

    (August 17, 1952- )
    Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Won one US Open (1977), one French Open (1977) and two Australian Opens (1978-79)
    Highest ranking: #2 (1975,1977)
Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame (1991)

Why he might be annoying:

He wrote two volumes of poetry.
An assessment by Argentina's leading literary figure, blind author Jorge Luis Borges: 'Just imagine me playing tennis.'
He skipped Wimbledon to spend a week in Maui with Princess Caroline of Monaco (1982).
Two and a half decades after he retired, he managed to add three titles to his total of career victories on clay surfaces. (Explanation: With Rafael Nadal on the verge of tying Vilas' record, the ATP rechecked its archives and discovered that three victories by Vilas on clay had been misrecorded as occurring on hard courts.)
The ATP did a poor job of distributing the update, with the result that after Nadal won the Argentine Open (March 1, 2015), many media outlets erroneously reported that he had tied Vilas at 46 clay titles each.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is left handed.
He is fluent in Spanish, English, French and Italian.
He set the record for most wins in a season, with 134 in 1977.
He would argue with linesmen over bad calls that had gone against his opponent.
He popularized the between-the-legs return, which was dubbed the 'Gran Willy' in his honor.
