He was friends with Richard Pryor and Freddie Prinze, who helped get him his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
He beat out David Letterman to be chosen to host of 'Real People.'
He was the last star chosen to play the Head-to-Head Match on the Gene Rayburn-hosted version of Match Game. He and the contestant matched to win $10,000 (September 10, 1982).
