    She and John were childhood playmates and high school sweethearts. They were married for 73 years.
    She overcame her debilitating speech impairment at age 53 after attending a three-week treatment program.
    She received the first national award from the American Speech and Hearing Association for 'providing an inspiring model for people with communicative disorders.'
    She became an adjunct professor with the speech pathology department at Ohio State University.
    She and her fellow Mercury Project wives influenced fashion and consumerism after public appearances (pearls, red lipstick, station wagons).
    She and John were friends and supporters of Bobby Kennedy and were present on the night that he was murdered.
