He struggled academically through high school and college and left for the NBA after his junior season.
He never won an NBA championship.
His teams made the NBA Finals eight times and lost every time.
He retired nine games into the 1971-72 season. Ironically, the Lakers won the NBA title that year without him.
Knee problems plagued him throughout his entire career.
His coaching tenure with the Jazz was ill-fated.
The Clippers have maintained mediocrity during his tenure as general manager.

He was one of the flashiest basketball players ever.
He is called 'the man with the thousand moves.'
He has one of the highest scoring averages in NBA history.
He was the first NBA player to score 70 points in a game (1960).
He holds the record for most points scored in an NBA Finals game (61).
He took lightly-regarded Seattle University to the NCAA championship game (1958).
He is a member of the NBA's 35th Anniversary and 50th Anniversary teams.
