TV Personality

The Resume

    (December 19, 1922-November 5, 1987)
    Born in Dublin, Ireland
Hosted 'What's My Line' (1951-63, 1984-87), 'This Is Your Life' (1955-64, 1969-87), 'Crackerjack!' (1955-64), 'The Eamonn Andrews Show' (1964-69), and 'World of Sports' (1965-68)
Chaired the Radio Eireann Authority (1960-64) during the introduction of TV service to Ireland
Named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to broadcasting (1970)

Why he might be annoying:

He wound up the first 'This Is Your Life' guest (with Ralph Edwards from the American version serving as presenter) after the identity of the originally intended guest, soccer star Stanley Mattews leaked to the press. His response on realizing he was the guest: 'Oh, blimey.'
As a chat show host, he was known for awkward, non-sequitur transitions, like 'Speaking of cheese sandwiches, did you come far?'
His spoken word recording 'The Shifting Whispering Sands' (1956) later appeared on Kenny Everett's compilation album 'The World's Worst Record Show.'

Why he might not be annoying:

As an amateur boxer, he won the Irish junior middleweight title (1944).
He and his wife adopted three children.
He was the only person to appear on the US version of What's My Line? as a mystery guest, a panelist, and a host (temporarily subbing for John Charles Daly).
He was voted Television Personality of the Year four times.
