    Born in Zanesville, Ohio
    Birth name is Pearl Zane Gray (not a typo)
    Most famous for his novels about the American West, including ‘The Spirit of the Border’ (1905), ‘Riders of the Purple Sage’ (1912), ‘Call of the Canyon’ (1924) and ‘Code of the West’ (1934)
    Also wrote several books and articles about deep-sea fishing

Why he might be annoying:

    He frequently fought other children when growing up.
    He worked as an unlicensed dentist as a teenager.
    He fathered a child out of wedlock when still in university.
    Although famed for his Western novels, he never visited the West until he was 33.
    Modern readers often find him melodramatic.
    He was an unrepentant womanizer who told his wife, ‘But I love to be free.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    His hometown Zanesville was founded by a relative who fought in the American Revolution.
    He won a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.
    He did extensive research for his Western novels.
    He avoided alcohol and tobacco.
    He was a renowned deep-sea fisherman who invented a hookless bait.
    His books were made into over 100 films.
