He is an admirer of Han Feizi, a philosopher called 'the Machiavelli of China.'
He has ordered crackdowns on human rights lawyers, feminists, religious leaders and social activists.
He has promoted a Mao-style personality cult, with such manifestations as art school applicants being asked to draw portraits of Xi as part of their entrance exams.
He denounced human rights, constitutional democracy and a free press as 'dangerous Western values.'
He got the National People's Congress to remove term limits on the presidency, allowing him to rule indefinitely (2018).
He has promoted increased censorship of the internet in China, such as a ban on images of Winnie the Pooh after the plump bear was compared to Xi.
Why he might not be annoying
During China's Cultural Revolution, his sister was killed when militant students ransacked the family home.
His father was arrested as 'an enemy of the revolution.'
He was sent to a work camp to dig ditches.
He ordered several crackdowns on corruption in businesses and government.
He has been described as hard working and 'seemingly uninterested in the trappings of high office.'
