Why he might be annoying:

    He had a feminine first name.
    He was turned down when he tried to enlist in the Union Army.
    He dropped out of Oberlin College after he ran out of money.
    He treated the black sharecroppers working on his plantation as badly as a white plantation owner would have.

    He was born a slave.
    He founded a school for black children in Hannibal, Missouri (1864).
    He was the first African-American to preside over the Senate (February 14, 1879) and to serve a full term in the Senate.
    He advocated for better treatment of Native Americans, declaring that the nation’s Indian policies were ‘controlled by stern selfishness.’
    He opposed the Chinese Exclusion Act that banned the immigration of Chinese laborers.
    He was the first black politician considered for national office by a major party, receiving eight votes for Vice-President at the Republican National Convention (1880).
