Died from throat cancer

Why he might be annoying:

He left home at 17 years old.
He once referred to his career as a 'disease.'
He was expected to star in Tod Browning's film, Dracula (1931), but he had to go and die a month after the announcement (bummer!).

Both of his parents were deaf mutes (quiet house, eh?).
He used his ability to communicate via pantomime in silent movies.
He played many ethnic roles (including a chinese outcast), yet he never portrayed any of his characters in blackface.
He sacrificed his own comfort to create illusions on screen.
He said: '...the things you are most derogatory about you like the best.'
He was a fan of boxing and briefly managed several prizefighters.
He treated those with handicaps and social injustices as his equals.
