Nickname is 'Pippo'

Why he might be annoying:

He was temperamental and self-absorbed.
He abandoned a production because he was jealous of the media attention his costar Maria Callas was getting.
He destroyed his voice by over-singing.
His voice became ragged, dry and painful to listen to.
Despite many bad reviews and booing crowds, he continued to sing for many years.

Why he might not be annoying:

Asthma kept him from serving in the Italian army during World War II.
He fled Italy when German forces arrived there in 1943.
In his prime, he was considered one of the finest living tenors.
At 83, he fought off robbers who attacked him in his car in Kenya (November 30, 2004).
He saved his wife from the attackers.
He wound up in a coma from a head injury following the brutal attack. He came out of the coma January 2005.
