Why he might be annoying:

He didn't start diving until he was inspired by watching Greg Louganis compete in the Olympics (1984).
He came out of retirement to compete in the 1996 Summer Olympics, bum shoulder and all.
    He suffered from Post-Olympic depression.
His depression got so bad, he struggled to get out of bed.
Like many athletes, he packed on the pounds after he stopped competing.
A 'fiasco' ensued after tabloids reported he'd tried to sell his Olympic gold medal.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He attended Indiana University.
He was a two-time NCAA diving champion and won five Big Ten titles.
At the US Indoor Diving Championships, he became the first diver to score 100 points for a single dive (1991).
Olympic teammate Matt Scoggin described him as a 'very confident competitor.'
Prior to switching to diving, he'd earned several scholarship offers to wrestle in college.
He never tried to sell his Olympic gold medal; he'd considered using it as loan collateral so he could take lessons to become a professional pilot.
