    They changed members often.
Chuck originally formed a band in high school and dumped his two original bandmates.
Their early albums were full of gore-inspired lyrics and imagery.
Chuck's vocal style is primarily a low, guttural grunt.
Chuck upset many fans when he announced, in 1996, that he was breaking up Death and starting a different band.
Chuck had no medical insurance, which may have been partly responsible for his death in 2001.
They were widely considered to be the founders of the death metal sub-genre.
Their music evolved with every album, keeping them fresh and interesting.
They influenced Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse and just about every other death metal act.
They were heavily influenced by Iron Maiden, Venom and the Bay Area thrash scene of the 80s (Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, etc.).
Chuck was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2001 and ultimately succumbed to it (December 2001).
    Chuck was an excellent guitarist.
