Why he might be annoying:

    He got a job in the mailroom of 20th Century Fox through the influence of gossip columnist Louella Parsons, who was a friend of his mother.
    He was typecast as tough guys, especially cowboys and military personnel.
    He went bankrupt (1994), losing his home and most of his possessions, and had to spend his last years in the Motion Picture and Television Retirement Center.
    His friend Robert Blake called him the only person he knew 'crazier than me.'

    He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.
    He was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for 'Sometimes a Great Notion.'
    He was a popular Little League coach in West Los Angeles.
    He and Antoinette Marches were married for 50 years.
    When he was diagnosed with melanoma, he said, 'I know people are pulling for me to beat this thing, but let them have a glass at the bar for me and let it go at that.'
