    As an Arizona Congressman he lobbied for federal funding for hydroelectric dam projects similar to the ones he would oppose as Interior Secretary.
    He was named to the cabinet partly as a reward for persuading the Arizona delegation at the 1960 Democratic convention to switch its support from LBJ to Kennedy.
    He was replaced in Congress by his brother Morris.
    He wrote, 'The atomic weapons race and the secrecy surrounding it crushed American democracy.'
    He was married to Erma Lee Webb for 54 years until her death.
    He was a B-52 tail gunner during World War II.
    He organized the first White House conference on conservation since the Teddy Roosevelt administration.
    He presided over the preservation of 3.85 million acres of land, creating 4 new national parks, 8 national seashores and 50 wildlife refuges.
    He helped draft the legislation that provided compensation and a formal apology to uranium miners who contracted cancer from their exposure to radiation (1990).
    He hiked the Grand Canyon well into his mid-80s.
