Why he might be annoying:

His main nickname other than 'Slapsie' was 'the Harlem Harlequin.'
His technique of slapping opponents with open gloves was eventually banned by the New York State Athletic Commission.
He was accused of neglecting training to chase women and gamble.
The Pittsburgh Press called him one of the most 'irresponsible playboys of boxing.'
He was typecast in movies as dimwitted, punch-drunk toughs.
Gangster Mickey Cohen funded his nightclub.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was allegedly discovered by actor George Raft, who saw him in a street fight and encouraged him to learn to box professionally.
He was the busiest title holder in ring history, boxing 106 times in four and a half years, an average of a fight every 15 days.
He fought with four other Jewish boxers in an exhibition at Madison Square Garden to raise relief funds for Jews in Palestine (1929).
He entertained US troops in Korea.
He developed pugilistic dementia from receiving hundreds (if not thousands) of blows to the head over his career.
Philip Roth wrote, 'In my scheme of things, Slapsie Maxie was a more miraculous Jewish phenomenon by far than Dr. Albert Einstein.'
