Why they might be annoying:

    It was originally spelled Greensborough (1808-1895).
    The city was built around a courthouse.
    Its namesake Major General Nathanael Greene actually lost the battle in that area to the British (March 15, 1781).
    The land was purchased for $98.
    It is nicknamed the 'Gate City.'
    The city left the United States to join the Confederacy.
    4 black college students staged a sit in at Woolworth's all-white lunch counter (February 1, 1960). This launched many other sit-in civil rights protests
    Violence erupted when when a Communist Workers Party rally brought protestors from the Ku Klux Klan and a neo-Nazi group (November 3, 1979). 5 members of the CWP were killed and it became known as the Greensboro Massacre (November 3, 1979).
    The all-white jury acquitted all the KKK and Nazi members that were brought to trial.
    It has a higher than average crime rate.

    It's population voted to stay in the U.S. but was forced to be part of the confederacy when North Carolina left the union.
    It served as the final meeting place for the entire confederacy government (April 1865).
    It served as a temporary capital for North Carolina (1865).
    The medicine company Vicks was founded here.
    Yvonne J. Johnson, an African-American, was elected mayor in 2007.
    In 1998 FedEx decided to open a hub airport here it was not completed until 2009.
    It is home to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
    It houses one of America's best cricket grounds, Hobson Field.
    It was the first home to an NHL Team in North Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes (1997-1999).
