The Resume

    (December 21, 1946-February 6, 1998)
    Member of the Beach Boys
Co-wrote 'Dance, Dance, Dance,' 'Feel Flows,' 'Long Promised Road' and 'You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone'
Sang lead on 'God Only Knows,' 'Darlin',' 'Keepin' the Summer Alive' and 'Palisades Park'
Released 'Carl Wilson' (1981) and 'Youngblood' (1983)

Why he might be annoying:

His solo albums generated little critical praise and dismal sales.
He was overweight throughout his life, and used to wear jumpsuits on stage to hide it.
He temporarily quit the Beach Boys in 1981.
He nearly went to jail in 1967 by evading the draft and finally applying as a CO.
He made the Beach Boys cancel their appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival due to his meeting with the draft board.
His Beach Boys productions were usually credited to the group and not to him.
He told Brian Wilson that he couldn't produce a Beach Boys record in 1991.
He told reporter Timothy White that 'Sly Stone and Terry Melcher... were hitting on Brian for $1500 a week so they could score coke' when that was not the case.
He threw up when he heard the Beach Boys' first record on the radio.

Why he might not be annoying:

He took control of the group when brother Brian became largely unproductive.
He is generally acknowledged as the best live performer and singer in the group.
He always tried to advance the group's sound, going to such drastic measures as inducting South African musicians into the group.
His co-written (with Brian Wilson) song 'Good Timin' ' has been compared to Brian's 'Surfer Girl.'
    He appeared natural in interviews.
He suggested the use of a cello as a rhythm instrument on 'Good Vibrations.'
His voice has been called 'better than Brian's,' due to Brian's chain-smoking years wherein he had a rough voice.
The Beach Boys were almost called 'Carl and the Passions.'
He died of lung cancer (1998).
