He never played football during his high school years.
He was too small for a defensive back.
He was virtually unknown prior to his performance in the 95th Grey Cup game.
He was unable to replicate his performance in the years following that game.
Despite being a cult hero in Saskatchewan, he was traded to the arch rival Blue Bombers two years after the Grey Cup win.

Why he might not be annoying:

He began playing football in junior college, and didn't receive his equipment until he earned a spot on the roster.
He earned a scholarship at Arkansas State University, despite his limited experience playing the sport.
He paid his own way to Regina and impressed the Riders coaches in training camp, earning a roster spot, prior to the 2006 season.
He recorded three interceptions for the Roughriders in the 95th Grey Cup, securing the team's first victory in 18 years (2007).
His performance in the Grey Cup led him to be somewhat of a folk hero in Saskatchewan.
