Why she might be annoying:

    Dear God, that hideous Janelle Monae coif!
    It sounds like ‘kaiser.’
    A damaged knee put the kibosh on her ballet aspirations — though she was still able to do other styles of dance (and gymnastics).
    She attributes her first composition to her parents’ divorce.
    During the shoot for ‘Hideaway,’ where she claimed to have to learn five styles of dance in some three days, she suffered a broken rib — and became practically incapacitated for a month.
    She has written for Rihanna.

    She served as a codebreaker in the Royal Canadian Navy, where her brother was enlisted.
    During Navy crew singalongs, she took up music in earnest and went on to donate 4,500 CDs to Canadian troops in Afghanistan.
    In addition to a Norwegian father, her grandfather was a Scotsman — ‘he was of the black Douglases.’
    She has written for Kylie Minogue.
    ‘Hideaway’ is a spectacular example of a ‘one take’ music video clip (single continuous uncut shot), made even more impressive in that it needed only two takes.
    Her signature pose – shown in this profile picture – is reminiscent of the opening of Madonna’s ‘Dress You Up.’
